Thank you all for your help. The title my colleague needed was
Z for Zachariah by Robert C. O'Brien
The diary of Ann Burden, 16, who thinks she is the only survivor of
nuclear war until a man with a radiation-proof suit comes into the
valley. Though John Loomis seems pleasant enough at first, his arrival
soon brings disaster, uncertainty, loneliness and terror for Ann.
However, I was able to give him many other suggestions on similar themes:
Earth Abides by George Stewart
On the Beach by Neville Shute
Children of the Dust by Louise Lawrence.

Phoenix Rising by Karen Hesse
"Thirteen-year-old Nyle learns about relationships and death when
fifteen-year-old Ezra, who was exposed to radiation leaked from a nearby
nuclear plant, comes to stay at her grandmother's Vermont farmhouse."
How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff.
Fallout by Gudrun Pausewang?
There's a good short story by Stephen Vincent Benet "By the Waters of
Babylon"
The main character is a young boy who
journeys alone to discover knowledge. It seems to be set in a primitive
time, but the reader gradually figures out that he is traveling down
the Hudson River to explore New York City, which is devastated by a
nuclear war that apparently happened in the distant past. The point is
that knowledge can be used for good or evil. It's worth a read.
Thank you so much for helping me support colleagues.
You're great!
Readingly yours,
Chris
