Have any of you utilized any incentives in order to get more teacher
participation in reading State Nominees to their classes? Here in Georgia we have
the
Georgia Book Award Program. I only participate in the Picture Book Award
Nominees since we are a Pre-3 school. I keep a list of the nominees (this year
it was 20 books and two alternates) that I use to check off titles I read to
classes, but also give teachers a check-off list. Generally I have 2-3 teachers
out of sixteen K-3 classrooms that read all nominees. This year I had one.
A couple came close to reading them all, four classrooms in the same grade
level didn't read a single one. Others read at least several.
We begin the program in late August or early September and I know for the
most part these teachers read books to their kids. I'd like to give them some
incentive next year to read the nominees...like each teacher who reads all the
nominees will be treated to lunch. I was thinking something from a local
Honeybaked Ham store and getting boxed meals and tea. It would cost about
$10/teacher and using book fair money I should be able to afford that amount...but
then I come into what about situations where a room has an aide...or the teacher
wasn't the one who read the books but it was the aide or a student teacher? I
know of one teacher whose student teacher has read most of her nominees this
year.
I'll post a hit if there is interest.
Thanks in advance!
