I have been following several of the postings here from elementary
people who have discussed the fact that their jobs would become
half-time next year because of budget shortfalls or an LMS who was
taken to task by her administrator because she let students color at
the end of a library lesson (this was a first-year person with 10
35-minute lessons per day!!!).
I was thinking about these LMSs in context of the ACRL article which
points out three things that need to be done for libraries to make
their way into the "messy future".
http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlissues/future/changingroles.htm
As a secondary LMS I had support staff, another certified LMS, and
flexible time to reflect on and try to implement some of the issues
discussed in the ACRL article (points that have been discussed by many
people).
I couldn't help but wonder if elementary people, in particular, are in
a vicious cycle of being so tied down to simply getting through the
present that by not being able to adapt to what looks like a "messy
future" that we are, in effect, potentially killing off library
programs simply because of the sheer difficulty of trying to adapt in
an educational environment that isn't giving (elementary) LMSs the
opportunity to change.
What say ye? In what was are elementary programs adapting to the 2.0
world and yet have a demanding teaching load every day?
