The information literacy skills I will be teaching our students are structured from
the state standards, the ISTE/NETS standards and Information Power; the library
curriculum uses all of those along with the subjects being taught at that time in
the classroom to bring authentic learning to the students. Being new to this
campus means it will take me a year to learn the curriculum. I will be keeping a
"map" of everything I learn about the various teacher's curriculum topics
throughout the year so that each time the students are in the library the lesson
pertains to a current subject (i.e., in science they are studying reptiles and
amphibians, the library lesson could cover how to use the index (1), it could be on
how to read and find information in non-fiction text (2), it could be about note
taking (3) or it could be on developing a family tree using the library resources.
(4))
The collection would be managed to reflect those topics the teachers are using;
weeding, purchasing and displays would all be done with that in mind. Teachers
input would be gladly accepted and sought for additions to the collection. All
purchased items requested by a specific teacher would then be made known to that
teacher as soon as they were collection ready.

I had an interview today for a position as an elementary school media specialist.
One of the questions I found difficult to answer. It was worded something like
this: "With assessments and standards becoming increasingly important in schools,
how would you structure the library programs to accommodate this?" I answered
something about collaborating with teachers, and sending out a survey to ask what
type of books the teachers would like. I got the feeling this was not what they
were looking for.
What would you LMS' have said?
Thanks,
