Thank you to all who responded to my question about finding biographies of
people from a certain century. I'm going to order the Timetables of History.
Here is my original post and the answers I received.
Thanks again!

*This site allows you to sort by time, however it is only women.

*This site has date ranges, however it is only scientists

*There are several time-line books that cover large blocks of history for
science, discovery, math, etc. I can't think of their titles though. I
have seen then in various libraries
*Here's a link to an art historical timeline. Use the pulldown menu to look
for indiviudal artists' names.

*The Timetables of History, by Bernard Grun, based upon Werner Stein's
Kulturfahrplan.
For those of you who are not familiar with this book, each two-page
spread has columns for History and Politics; Literature and Theater;
Religion, Philosophy, Learning; Visual Arts; Music; Science, Technology,
Growth; and Daily Life. Rows are by year. Each cell gives a very brief
statement of something important that happened in that area that year. I
just opened the book at random, and the entries for Daily Life in 1608
are: First checks-"cash letters'-in use in Netherlands. Royal Blackheath
Golf Club, London, founded; still in existence. Obviously there isn't
much detail there, but one can use the little bit as a starting point.
I just checked TitleWave, and the 4th edition is now out (I have the 3rd
edition) so I added it to my next order.
*I have a great set called Dictionary of World Biography it includes massive
volumes on seemingly anyone who is anyone important. The books are indexed
to include Area of Achievement, Geographical Location, and a Name Index. It
is very thorough with an excellent bibliography after each entry (usually 10
citations). Each entry is between 3-5 pages (the pages are 8.5"x11") with a
small print to pack a lot on the page. There is usually a picture or
illustration for each person. The volumes are broken down by time period,
The Ancient World, The Renaissance, 17th-18th Century, 19th Century, 20th
Century.
It has a copyright of 1999 and is published by Salem Press. They probably
have a newer version. It is great for research projects!
