Dear LM_Netters,
As this is my very first posting to LM_Net, please allow me to genuflect for just a
minute before I continue.
OK, I'm up now, but am in truth consistently bewildered by the awesome power of
this group.
A fellow librarian, one I respect a great deal, has persuaded me to believe that
the email below would be "list-worthy". I hope that you'll agree...
Mr. Rogers had such an incredible effect on so many people. Wasn't that his
specialty? Making us all feel special?
When I watched this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a41lJIhW7fA) early this
morning, I was terribly moved. Then I watched it again. And then I repeated "It's
such a good feeling, a feeling inside, it's such a happy feeling, to know you're
alive" throughout my entire morning routine. How I need to write to the queen of A
Fuse #8 Production (one of my favorite all-time children's lit blogs, found here:
http://fusenumber8.blogspot.com/) to thank her personally for pointing me in
direction of this booster rocket.
And now I need to find the people in charge of Fred Rogers' estate and ask whether
I can adopt his perfect phrase "expression of care" as the motto for my libraries.
Or is this even necessary? If I credit him properly, can I use it in publicity
materials for the libraries? I feel like it describes--so well--what libraries are
meant to do for children.
What do you think? Please let me know off-list.
Thanks,
Jill

Subject: Mr. Roger's 1969 plea to congress on behalf of children
Dear Children's Advocate,
I am going to inquire as to whether I can legally adopt the use of Mr. Roger's
phrase "expression of care" for the elem. library program. (His word choice of
"bombardment" also stood out to me, and got me thinking about testing!)
What a beautiful man. If you have to skip some of this 6-minute video, I'll
understand, but do be sure to catch the end:

From "A Fuse #8 Production" (a phenomenal children's lit blog):
"This past week Fred Rogers would have turned 79 years of age. In 1969, Mr. Rogers
testified before a Senate subcommittee in the pursuit of funding for PBS. I find it
very interesting to see that Fred really did talk this way to adults as well as
kids. I also love the tough guy he keeps speaking too who, in the course of the
testimony, is completely charmed the by Mr. Rogers persona."
