Here is the Hit for those who requested it; and many thanks again to all who sent
suggestions.
Original post:
"We have a sophomore English teacher who is wanting to update her assigned
nonfiction list, and the only helpful list of secondary nonfiction that I could
find in the archives is from 2003. I have a few new things to recommend to her,
but our English department and I would really appreciate any recommendations you
might have for interesting nonfiction for high schoolers in a range of difficulty
levels."
Responses:
How about (off the top of my head):
Nickled and Dimed in America
Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer
Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster
Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers (not for the faint-of-heart, but
interesting)
Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia
Fast Food Nation
Branded: The Buying and Selling of Teenagers
Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls

You might look at recent Sibert winners and books by Sue Campbell Bartoletti.
Also, Shutting out the Sky and Up Before Daybreak by Deborah Hopkinson.

I really enjoyed An American Plague: The True and Terrifying Story of the Yellow
Fever Epidemic of 1793 by Jim Murphy. It was high interest for me - not a big
history or nonfiction fan. I also really liked The Life and Death of Adolf Hitler
by Giblin.

I would suggested The Glass Castle by J.Wall. Excellent book, hard to believe
that it is a true story.

For Non-Fiction I would highly recommend Jon
Krakauer's Into thin air: a personal account of the
Mt. Everest disaster. His Into the wild is another
superlative piece of work about a college educated
young man who freezes to death in an abandoned bus in
Alaska.
For any Civil War fans, one of the best bks. I've
acquired for CHS in the last 2 yrs. is Eye of the
storm: A Civil War odyssey by Robt. Sneden. And Joe
McGinniss's Going to extremes is a stirring look at
the frozen north including the eccentrics that
populate Alaska.
*********************************************
The Hot Zone by Richard Preston
The Demon in the Freezer by Richard Preston
The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger
Seabisquit: An American legend by Laura Hillenbrand
Invisible Allies: Microbes That Shape Our Lives by Jeanette Farrell
*********************************************
I would suggest the following:
Secrets of a Civil War Submarine
Hitler Youth
Pedro and Me
Hole in My Life
Dove
Salt
Princess: Sultana's Daughters

I really like Immersed in Verse by Alan Wolf, All Made Up by Audrey
Brashich, and Harley-Davidson by Allan Girdler (published by
Motorbooks).
Hope this helps!
Thanks again!
