TARGET: Guided Reading and the Library Media Program

I am looking for some examples of library media specialists and how they work
or support guided reading in their buildings. I'm not as interested in do you
help provide or organize a leveled library of materials for teachers, but
rather what other services or instruction do you provide to students and/or
teachers that supports guided reading.

I provide access to whole literature (not controlled vocabulary materials) and
multiple copies for teachers when they want to teach a "class" book. I have
also team taught lessons with teachers. One such lesson came from Read, Write,
Teach http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=91

I'm not sure what you mean by guided reading, but for the last five years, I

have paired retired teachers and other community readers with children

one-on-one. They read a book together and then take an AR test. It's the

best thing I've ever done. The kids are making real progress.

In our schools, the support comes from cataloging the information and

processing the materials to be put in a guided reading library. Levels are

searchable. We do not select materials and they do not come out of our

budgets.

I am the library media specialist at a PreK-4th grade elementary school. I have
been assigned to help with small group guided reading lessons with 1st
graders. I spend 45 minutes daily in one of our 1st grade classrooms. During
that time, I meet with two small groups (5-6 kids each). I am responsible for
lesson planning, teaching, and assessing. I do not have any library aides, so
during that time the library is unavailable to the rest of the students at the
school.

I work with a small reading group in Kindergarten twice a week, doing

guided reading with them, One of those days is often during their"library

period" so we do guided reading instead of a whole class story/lesson. Then

they get to check out their weekly library books.

Developing Readers by Geraldine Haggard, Strategies that Work by Stepahine
Harvey and Anne Goudvis, Shared Reading With Big Books, There are other books
if you go to Barnes and Noble that you can get from interlibrary loan with
Guided Reading/Shared Reading.

Some of the ideas that I do in the library is to do prediction based on
titles. I do a picture walk if I have time. The main thing I like to do with
them is text to self or world connections.

I actually have a guided reading group!

TARGET: Phonemic Awareness and the Library Media Program

Hi everyone -

I'm back with another question for my writing project. I am looking for
examples of how library media specialists provide instruction and/or support
for phonemic awareness in their buildings. I'll be happy to post a HIT!

We actually have an entire collection for teachers. They've come in very handy
for our Early Childhood/Preschool & ELL classes!
