I heartily concur with Ronda! We had Ms. Wiles for our middle school and
she was truly phenomenal.

Subject: SHARE: Author visit, Deborah Wiles

Deborah Wiles, author of Each Little Bird That Sings; Love, Ruby
Lavender (both chapters books); and Freedom Summer (picture book)--
among others--came to talk to the 5th and 6th graders at the middle
school I'm interning at. I will say that she is a phenomenal guest
author. She handled some technical difficulties (lost luggage from
the airport, a too-hot auditorium, and a network glitch that had the
slideshow delayed) with great grace and humor. She held the
students' attention with humor, with excerpts from her stories,
family stories, family photos, and really got us all thinking about
"mining our own lives" for our own stories. Later that afternoon,
after a marathon book-signing (many of our students wanted her
autograph), she met with the small writing club where she shared more
insights about the process of writing. If you are looking for an
author to come visit, and particularly would like to inspire your
students to find their own voices and find their own stories, she is
definitely a great author to consider.
