LM_NET Archive

I am currently a paraprofessional in an academic library and am taking
distance education classes for an MLS in Library and Information Studies
at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I am taking a course in School
Library Media Programs and Resources and am subscribed to LM_NET as part
of my coursework. I would like to ask the LM_NET community for help with
a project I am involved with at work; from reading the list for the
past few weeks, I'm sure that the group wisdom will be able to help me.

As I mentioned, I work at an academic research library, and this year, I
am organizing games for our library staff association picnic. In the
past, we have done scavenger hunts and trivia games, but this year we
are doing backyard carnival type games, like children (used to) play,
like ring toss, clothespin drop, etc. I know - we're all adults, but
it's fun to act like a kid sometimes :o) We're also planning a spelling
bee and a Battle of the Brains team competition, as well as a timed
"organize this book truck for reshelving" contest.

One thing I would like to do is a "guess how many Xs in the Y" - like
how many jellybeans in the jar - but with a library twist. Any
suggestions for what kind of small, 3-dimensional items I can put in a
large glass jar to have people guess at? If I worked in a sports store,
I would stuff it full of gummy plastic worm lures, if I worked in a wine
shop, I'd use corks, but in a library? What kind of little things say
"library"?

I could fall back on paper clips, or binder clips, or the little golf
pencils used at the reference desk, but do you have any suggestions? Of
course, I'll share the suggestions with the list.

Thanks in advance.
