I was on a public radio panel with Susan Patron and Pat Scales. Pat had
been the chairperson of a recent Newbery committee and was representing
ALA. One of the things she stated was that the target ages for Newbery
winners were 0 to 14. That's a pretty wide audience.

A book like Dr. DeSoto (Newbery Honor book 1983) or Frog and Toad Together
(Newbery Honor book 1973) or ABC Bunny (Newbery Honor book 1943) definitely
has a different audience than Dicey's Song (Newbery 1983) or Walk Two Moons
(Newbery 1995)
