I haven't seen the game show everyone is talking about, but it is false that
"Fiction books are NOT assigned numbers in the Dewey Decimal
  System". The reason it is false is that fairy tales are assigned 398.2 in
the Dewey Decimal System. Fairy tales are usually fiction and so are many of
the 811 books. It is confusing that we call the books with numbers on them
non-fiction, and I always tell the children "except for the fairy tales
which are 398.2 and many (or maybe all) of the 811 books." I suppose fairy
tales and literature can be based on something true. In our library we
categorize chapter fiction books as fiction and picture books as easy.
However, several picture books are fiction while some are non-fiction. I am
a school librarian for K-2 and I do tell them about the Dewey System. We are
even looking at the on-line catalog and looking up books while doing author,
title, and subject searches. It's surprising what kids that young can
understand. They seem to be excited about looking at the OPAC.

I saw this show last night as well and was very annoyed with the question
and answer. Fiction books ARE assigned a Dewey number (in the 800s). It is
just that most libraries choose to keep all fiction books in a "Fiction"
section because this method is much more user friendly. So this show
portrayed a wrong answers to be correct as well as phrasing the question
in a very confusing manner.

Did anyone else see the new game show "Are you smarter than a 5th grader"
tonight?
One of the questions was in the category of 3rd grade reading. I didn't
see the
whole show, and came in on this question. But I think it said:

"True or false? Fiction books are NOT assigned numbers in the Dewey
Decimal System".

The woman contestant and all of the 5th graders answered false, and they
were told
this was correct.

Am I crazy? Did I see it wrong? I think everyone got tripped up by
semantics -- it
was confusingly worded.
But if I saw it correctly, this is perpetuating incorrect information to
however
many millions of folks watched the show.

I was pleased to see the question, even in it's tricky state of asking. =
It's a great way to bring dewey discussions up. My girls and I have =
loved this game show, and will continue to watch it. The kids, coached =
or not, have a great time. I've worked in Elementary, and the questions =
are pretty close to on target. I even had to admit that I couldn't come =
up with the Mayflower (couldn't get past the Nina, the Pinta, and the =

  I saw the show and remarked to my husband and son that this was a =
horrible=20
  question. The answer was correct--It is false that fiction books are =
NOT=20
  assigned a Dewey number, but the double negative is confusing to say =
the=20
  least. This show was already getting a thumbs down from me and this =
question=20
  cemented my poor opinion of it. I don't really buy that some of these=20
  questions are actually for the age the show says. They had a geometry=20
  question on Tuesday that was supposed to be fourth grade math. I never =
had=20
  to calculate the height of a triangle in the fourth grade. And the =
questions=20
  that are appropriate for the grade level are embarrassing when the=20
  contestants get them wrong. It seems like they are screening for dumb=20
  contestants. It also seems like the kids are coached. All-in-all, a =
bad=20
  show.

  That being said, I would like to get your opinions on one thing: I =
told my=20
  son and husband that most elementary kids would be totally confused by =
the=20
  Dewey question because, while there is a literature Dewey designation, =
most=20
  school libraries have fiction in a separate section. Am I wrong?

Subject: Gameshow: the correct answer was "false"

The correct answer is false. It was the first time I watched and I was
amazed at the poor wording, also. It is almost a double negative. I had
to take the "NOT" out and then reverse my answer: Fiction books are
assigned numbers in the Dewey Decimal System. This is, of course, true-
all fiction books are technically in the 800s in Dewey's system as
literature. So that must mean putting the "NOT" in the question changes
the answer to "false". Personally, I told my husband that this either
proved that the show was rigged (please, how many students know that
fiction books are technically 800s in the Dewey system even though
many/most libraries do not catalog them that way?) OR it proves how
badly the question was worded.

Subject: scrotums, books, and all that jazz

There have been some =93smart=94 and =93thoughtful=94 people posting =
about this subject to LM_NET. Even though I only have one of those two =
aforementioned characteristics, I will submit my experience.

Last year, we dealt with several book challenges, some going only to the =
informal =93school personnel only=94 meetings---all the way to the =
=93large room community/school board emotionally charged meeting.=94  =
(The challenges continue this year, but, so far, with less fervor. And, =
thanks to my administration, we have our challenge process well =
established.)

Thoughts:

The word =93appropriate=94 is a =93front=94 word, beyond which lies the =
whole gamut of human emotions. I will not attempt to define the word =
=93appropriate=94 and will leave that definition up to you. Most of the =
book challenges in my district dealt with books that were =93not =
appropriate=94 for middle school students, (grades 5-8), but rather =
should be moved to the high school, (grades 9-12). (Would that type of =
move, in your mind, constitute a ban?) =20

And here, also, is where the concept of =93in loco parentis=94 falls =
apart. When all of the books in a 5-8 school are intermingled within =
the same collection, some parents will believe their fifth grade =
children to be in grave danger. The parents of eighth grade children =
may think and feel otherwise. (Are we going to eventually end up with =
book collections specific to each grade?) In fact, we had to eventually =
devise an elaborate system which gave parents decision-making power for =
the reading choices of their children. In essence, we had to establish =
a =93profile=94 for each student. (Thank goodness for computerized book =
circulation systems that allow for us to create and monitor individual =
reading choices.)

It helps, when dealing with parents and emotionally charged book =
challenges, to not create an oppositional atmosphere. Reach out to =
opponents; or, at least, attempt to empathize with them. Respect their =
opinions and who they are, while at the same time maintaining your own =
standards, and, your own professional dignity. =20

There is idealism and there is pragmatism. They each have their value =
and their place in schools and in society. We human beings are a blend =
of the two. If you ever have to deal with book challenges, you may need =
to ask yourself to which side of that blend you gravitate.
