[LM_NET] TARGET: 5th grade read-aloud suggestions

A teacher is switching from 7th grade to a 5th grade position and has asked for 
some read-aloud suggestions.  She is particularly interested in  
beginning-of-the-year stories to provide a basis for discussion/community building. 
 With 7th graders, for example, she read _Crash_ and found that students could 
identify with the struggles to decide friendships, allegiances, and 
Any suggestions?
Would anyone recommend _Surviving Brick Johnson_ for this?  Appropriate grade level?
