Hi! I'm stuck in a tug of war with teachers who love the Accelerated Reader
Program and a personal position in which I'm less than thrilled about the
competition, cheap prizes, and limits that are set upon children's reading
selections.
HOWEVER,
My intention is not to debate the pro's and con's of AR-- I love and hate it at the
same time for different children.
SO
I'd like to move our elementary school's program away from the 'AR store' where
kids choose junky prizes based on numbers of points earned, the AR bulletin board
where students' names are moved along a board for all to see [great readers and not
so great readers' points earned are posted :( ], and competitive parents who bring
their kids into the library before we even open to 'help' their children take their
AR tests...
Providing positive incentives is great-- does anyone have any ideas how to motivate
kids to read without completely nixing the entire program and without the cheesy
and competitive promotions??? (And without angering the parents, teachers, and
students??)
Input will be appreciated.
