Dear All,
I and my aide do inventory every year and I think it is worth the trouble for two
reasons.
First and most important, it keeps my catalog reasonably accurate. If a student
looks up a book in the OPAC and it says the book in on the shelf, it probably is.
What's the point of teaching/insisting the kids look up books for themselves if the
information they get is inaccurate. It would become increasingly inaccurate each
year inventory isn't done.
Two, I use the list of lost and missing books (not returned, stolen) to order new
books for the collection. This year I started keeping books that have been
previously replaced, often more than once, behind the counter and having students
ask for them. We made a small poster mounted on cardboard with a picture of the
cover on it that says please ask for this book at the desk. It has worked very
well for the books that keep vanishing like a Child Called It. A security system
only works so well. The students don't seem to mind either and I haven't had to
replace those books again.
