Subject: GEN: Horn Book
Like many school librarians, I've read Horn Book for years. I've respected their
reviews and awards. So, when Debbie Reese's blog linked to Roger Sutton's (editor
and chief) blog, I was interested to read it (http://www.hbook.com/blog/). Mr.
Sutton and I don't always agree, but his opinions are usually worth listening to.
Consequently, I was shocked to see him use the 'F' word in his post complaining
about an annoying ad on SLJ's website. Isn't that word almost universally reviled
by civilized people? The only word that disturbs me more is a common racial
epithet. Does it give anyone else the creeps that a guy whose job it is to convey
his opinions about what children ought to be reading would use such clearly
offensive language in a public forum? Am I over reacting? Does his use of that word
on their official website color your opinion of the publication?
