Hello, all:
This may seem like a really silly question, but we are going to be painting our
library over the summer (small, school library in a private school).
Any ideas on best paint colors/finishes to use? Please respond offlist when you
get a chance!
Many thanks,
Dora Salm

Recently someone, a male member of LM_NET posted the site of the interview
questions he was asking candidates. If you are out there and read this soon could
you please send me the address again. I lost the copy I had and I deleted the
site-this makes me sound very scattered brain-but I really am a good candidate,
just a bit nervous. Thanks.

Subject: Re: Biography and DDC
The comment of librarians creating their "own secret system" within
the library is definitely one that is overwhelming to any librarian
going into a new school.
Once when I came to a new library, I mentioned creating a bibliography
of materials that related to the 1st grade teachers' project of
"Johnny Appleseed." The teachers were SO excited (I was a bit amazed
at their excitement, but decided that perhaps the last librarian
wasn't very service-oriented.) This was in 1990 and the library was
NOT automated, so the task would have been done the "hard way" by
searching the paper catalog---no problem, I was able to use one.
Then I began searching the catalog and discovered that the previous
librarian chose NOT to add SUBJECT cards to the card catalog. There
were only author and title cards in the card catalog and notations
made on the backs of some cards about other titles. If you didn't
know the title or the author of a book, too bad. The teachers had
been excited because I was attempting to do something that could NOT
be done without excessive research or in-depth knowledge of the
collection (which went with the previous librarian when she walked out
the door.) Her secret system was to eliminate any use of the
library---no one could figure out where anything was unless they kept
a running list of the books that they were interested in reading,
memorized the DDC to locate books on a specific subject, or relied on
her to help them (which she didn't).
Luckily, we automated the library the next year.

From: Alison Steinberg <aliphred@EARTHLINK.NET>
Subject: School Wide Book Issue
Hi Kelly and fellow LM_NETTERS
I was a library media specialist for over ten years (I recently switched to Asst
Prof/Online Services Librarian at a college). At my last school we had a school
wide book program every year and it began with a grant, in later years they had to
get creative with the budget and I too was pressured to use library funds. I
refused (politely) in the same manner that I refused to buy AR tests out of library
funds (if a vendor offered them for free I would tack them on, otherwise I kept a
list of the books we had that did not have tests and someone had to find the
money). My rule was that library funds were to be spent on material that were to be
housed solely in the library media center. I did not buy books for classrooms, or
school wide tests, or fund school wide programs that were not my own or purchase
equipment that was not for my information literacy instruction.
This attitude actually ended up rewarding me with more money in the end. Often
programs would end up with extra money or they might have a need to have reading
books that would not walk away and I would get a pile of money for the collection.
What I am getting at is that you need a purchasing policy that can be easily
understood and repeated in a brief and understandable fashion. People will get
desperate and they will try and hijack your budgets. You need to stand your ground,
never leave any money unused (in fact spend it fast so that you can ask for more
when someone says you need to purchase something), and celebrate everything you buy
for the library so that everyone can see how important your sacred library budget
is to them.
I hope that helps,
Alison Steinberg

I think that was me - not that I ask these questions ,but the Director of
Library Services for my district does. Remember these are questions that a
librarian would ask of a librarian - I would not expect a Principal to ask
these sorts of questions. Though,, if one did I would take the job in a New
