Lisa's post reminded me of a library I was in recently where they
used small baskets on the shelves for the youngest kids and picture
books were grouped by author or topic within the basket. You could
modify the system for elementary non-fiction collections if you
wanted to and still use Dewey to put the baskets in order on the
shelf....a thought. I can't decide how I feel about this either. I
like Dewey to a degree, but you have to make it work for you. The
obvious bonus of Dewey is that it's pretty widely used and kids
should in theory, be able to transfer what they know about their
school library to the public library. I didn't really understand
Dewey until I started teaching it and I remember having to memorize
it in school...guess it didn't stick!
