Brilliant Ones,
So, speaking of MySpace and authors and ALA and AASL ... ALA has a MySpace page
(www.myspace.com/atyourlibrary). I didn't know that. It's pretty cool and
encouraged me to search for an AASL profile, which I didn't find. Is there not
one? With all the wikis and Nings that I see us involved in, would there be a
benefit to a MySpace profile for AASL? If I'm really going to think as a teacher
librarian (and curriculum major), the first question should probably be: "What
would AASL want students/viewers to get out of an AASL MySpace profile?" One that
comes to mind is to connect to students, to connect authors and teachers and
students to students. And right now, more students use MySpace (in light of our
recent discussions I'm not suggesting this be a promotional tool to reach the
younger kiddos). Meg Cabot is one of ALA's "Top Friends" ... that would be very
enticing to some high school gals I know and it's within an interface they already
use.
As I'm writing this and sorting out my thoughts, it seems to me that, yes, the big
difference would be the audience. LM_NET is for us, as is Ning, to discuss and
share teacher librarian stuff. An AASL MySpace profile would, I'm guessing, be
more to reach students and be involved in their discussions, informally, socially.
It's the very essence of how we are our own special corner of ALA - we are for the
students, not ourselves. We have these discussions but is it merely to hash out,
behind-the-scenes, how to most effectively teach information literacy, and then
come out from behind the curtain and perform? What would it look like to have
these discussions with students? Or to anyone who has experience with this, what
_does_ it look like? Anyone want to do an AASL MySpace profile?
Oh, I'm going to have nothing left for library school after a summer on LM_NET. ;)
