At Tuesday's meeting we selected Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston
(June), The book thief by Markus Zusak (July), Places left unfinished at the
beginning of time by John Phillip Santos (August). For September we actually
selected an author rather than a specific book. The author is Amulya Malladi
who has written three books, Serving crazy with curry, A breath of fresh air,
and The mango season. We can read any or all of the books. Amulya Malladi
is willing to call book groups discussing her books for a phone discussion in
real time so we will try to set that up for the September meeting.
We need hosts for July, August, and September.
I just finished The book thief and loved it. Yes, it's about the Holocaust.
Yes, it's narrated by Death. Yes, people die. But, Death is an excellent
narrator. I think Death's ironic, detached tone helps the reader put some
distance between the events and the emotions so that you can appreciate the
courage and sorrow without being devastated. It's not a tearjerker.
Happy reading!
