As I am thinking through this issue of journal articles for sale on Amazon, I
realize that much of the appeal is the "one-stop shopping" convenience - one
user-friendly source listing all items available about a given topic. From there -
we can hope that people seek out our library resources rather than pay for them.
However - why can't our library catalogs do the same thing? Right now - folks have
to search the catalog and then switch to our online database web page and search
multiple databases. Amazon, with their marketing savvy, knows that making
something easy to find also makes it easy to buy. I know catalogs are going in
that direction. But amazon is already there.
And speaking of the profit motive.....Are publishers invested in raising obstacle
to federated searching in libraries? After all - the convenience of purchasing on
amazon means more money for them....

This is an interesting opportunity to discuss availability of information. Last
year I was researching language acquisition to discover the experts beyond Stephen
Krashen (a man I really appreciate and I teach from his theories) because I wanted
to be able to compare research. I located several articles available from Amazon.
I was searching online through regular search engines and these articles came up as
hits. I noted the citations for each piece and then I looked them up in EBSCO. It
was thrilling to find them there!! Oklahoma provides EBSCO Host products to OK
citizen library users for free.
Why would I buy from Amazon? I have better resources. Then, again, I'm a
librarian and I know about these resources.

I have noticed lately that Amazon has MANY professional level journal articles
for sale on thier site. I wonder....
1. Do they sell many of these articles?
2. Why would people spend $5, $10, or more for articles that in many cases they can
get free from library subscription services? For instance - I just ran across this
article: Online-Powered School Libraries. By: Richardson, Will. District
Administration, Jan2007, Vol. 43 Issue 1, p62-63, 2p; which I was able to print
using EBSCOhost Masterfile Select - provided free to NY residents via New York
State library funding.
3. Perhaps there are not enough states that provide these databases?
4. And the most likely scenario - perhaps the databases are not being promoted
enough.
5. Why is it SO hard to get people to percieve libraries as free access to
resources in all formats - digital as well as books. How do we break out and get
people to realize that computers have not replaced libraries. That libraries
enhance access to digital information. Getting people to connect libraries with
loaning videos etc. did not seem nearly as steep a learning curve.
Feeling a bit philisophical today I guess....
