- Thread-Topic: Arizona library drops Dewey-what the media didn't tell you
Colleagues,
I am reviving the Dewey discussion because ALA TechSource has done a
wonderful job of explaining the reasoning behind the Maricopa County
Library District's decision to organize one of their libraries with
something other than the Dewey Decimal System. To read the story go to
http://www.techsource.ala.org/blog/2007/07/raising-arizona.html
What the media didn't tell you is that the decision took years of data
collection and planning, including data that indicated that 80% of users
at the branch libraries came to browse popular reading rather than look
for specific information.
There is an alternate cataloging system in place- called BISAC.
The Perry Branch happens to be a shared-use facility. It's located on a
school campus. The Maricopa County Library District has hired a
teacher-librarian who will work with the teachers to integrate the
library into the school curriculum.
More updates as school begins...
