Dear Colleagues,
If every librarian on this list got one non-librarian to advocate for the SKILLS
Act by writing their representatives and senators, the message would be ten times
as powerful.
Successful advocacy means that people stand up with you and for you. Please
encourage the following people to write their representatives and senators asking
them to co-sponsor and/or support the SKILLS Act:
1) Parents. This legislation is about student learning.
2) Teachers. See above.
3) Administrators. See above.
4) Librarians in public and higher education. Student learning impacts how students
utilize these libraries as well.
A toolkit will be forthcoming from the AASL Taskforce on NCLB within two weeks with
sample letters written from the point of view of each of these constituencies. In
the meantime, please distribute the SKILLS Act information to wherever you think is
necessary. Student learning is germane to quite a few of our colleagues!
Thanks,

I don't know if it's appropriate to the makeup of those lists, but perhaps
the members of the YALSA and Childlit listservs would be interested?
I sent my representatives emails, but also had my family members from
California, Florida, and New York do the same. They don't understand all
the ramifications, but they do want to support the librarian in the family.

We have found that a library is not an end in itself, but a means to many
ends.
