I was required to take a "reading" course in my library media certification
program. People just naturally equate librarians with reading since we deal
with books. The NCLB has gotten everyone involved in reading. All of our
teachers are required to do some reading and writing strategies with their
students no matter what subject matter they teach, and this is high school.
Interestingly, the new district library media director in my district is a
reading specialist.

Education is not a goal; it is a life-long process. Everyone is a student.
Everyone is a teacher.

This new role for library media specialists has everything to do with NCLB.
Thank goodness your principal recognizes you as key in the reading success
of students at your school. Some principals do not recognize this connection
and are therefore eliminating their library media specialists and replacing
them with literacy coaches or other reading support staff.

real role as librarian should be in the schools.
Most schools have a reading specialist, but most principal expect us to have
the same role as the reading specialist. I always thought we were
information specialists, and our main goal is to help students find
information they need. But principals expect us to know the intricancies of
teaching reading. In my Master's degree in Library Science, they did not
have enven one reading course. Can someone please explain. Are the
principals confused about our roles, or am I the one that's confused.
