The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission (ALBC, http://www.lincoln200.gov),
in coordination with Social Studies Forum leader Michael Hutchison, invites all
interested educators to participate in the first of a series of online events
leading to the 200th anniversary of Lincolnâs birth in 2009. This informal
chat will be held in Tapped In (www.tappedin.org) February 7 at 8 p.m. Eastern
(5 p.m. Pacific).
The goal of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission is to inform the nation
(and the world) about the impact that the 16th President had on the development
of our nation, and to honor his accomplishments through education. Eileen
Mackevich, executive director of the ALBC, Jennifer Rosenfeld, ALBC program
director, and Darrel Bigham, ALBC commissioner and professor of history at the
University of Southern Indiana, Evansville, will be on hand to learn about the
activities and resources that you use to teach about Lincoln and successful
experiences that you would like to share. They will also ask for your input
into what sorts of assistance and resources the ALBC can provide to support
teachers and students learning about Lincoln.
We will also begin discussing pertinent issues, such as changing
African-American perceptions of Lincoln, Lincoln and the civic education of new
immigrants to the United States, and Lincoln and his role in the Mexican War (as
seen on both sides of the border).
To attend this session in Tapped In, non-members may log in as a guest or
register for free membership at www.tappedin.org (click sign up). Tapped In
help desk personnel will be on hand to assist new users. We suggest that new
users log in prior to Feb 7 to become comfortable with the chat interface. The
day of the session, please log in at least 10 minutes prior to the start of the
session.
Please send questions or inquiries about the session to Michael Hutchison at
