For the last five years we have closed the library to only reading--we don't even
turn on the student use computers. English teachers sign up to bring their classes
to read. We move furniture and bring in old wrestling mats, pillows, bean bag
chairs, etc. I play soft reading music in the background. Students may have
drinks (the only time of the year). They must have a book to read brought in
advance, no magazines. It works really well.
This year we will also have an all night Read In for about 50 students who are our
top readers in Reading Counts. Did this 5 years ago when March 2 was also on a
Friday. Had no problems except for me trying to stay awake!
