[LM_NET] Targe: looking for author and title

Hello All,
I'm hoping this will ring a bell with someone, I've spent fruitless time searching. 
 A friend is looking for a book about 3 groups of people, I believe in jail, that 
have a white sheet between them and are told that when the sheet is dry they are
free.  Someone comes everyday and wets the sheet leaving each group to figure out 
how to dry it.  One group says the hell with this and eats like crazy, one group 
does something else crazy, while the third works like to get the sheet dry which 
they
do succeed in doing.  It might be called White Sheet or Long Sheet?   It sounds 
possibly like a short story but she believes it's a book.  Anything?  Anyone?
