Thanks to all you who responded with suggestions. HP lasers are an
overwhelming favorite, and the various 4000 series models are
specifically singled out as workhorses. While several models have been
discontinued, machines may still be available from various dealers. The
best advice was to spend some time on the phone with dealers.
Several b/w models are available in the $700-$1000 range. Any more than
$1000 ought to go toward a color machine, according to several of you.
Since I'm only interested in b/w, that will help my budget numbers.
Probably the best suggestion of all was to call HP and tell them what
you want to do and see what models they suggest. There seems to be
varying "pencil-sharpening" abilities there, so don't just accept the
price HP quotes - check some other dealers as well.
