I work in a K-5th grade school where one of my classes is an intermediate
unit class. The group is comprised of 5 students who are approximately 10 years
old. Each of them has a teacher who assists them full time and remains with
them in the library. They all use wheelchairs and are non-verbal. They have
limited use of their hands. Most of them will make vocal noises and smile in
response to things that make them happy. I actually found that they enjoy
music. Since they don't meet with the music teacher, I have been giving them
bells and other hand held instruments for them to use while I play the guitar.
They love this, however, I would like to do more with liturature. I have told
stories using puppets and they respond well to the puppets. I was wondering if
others have similar classes and what you have found to be successful with
these students. I am fairly new at this school and I don't think the previous
librarian was very comfortable with these students. My bag of tricks is getting
old and I would appreciate any helpful ideas.
