[LM_NET] TARGET:Sci Fi for 8th grade

Does anyone have a really good science fiction recommendation for a
gifted 8th grader?  It has to be science fiction and not fantasy.  He
reads constantly and can't come up with a good choice for our book club.
He reads adult science fiction all the time and has suggested two titles
that I cannot condone because of sexual content.  We've already read
"House of the Scorpion", "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe", "The Eye
, the Ear and the Arm", The Ender Books.  The book can be up to 350
pages-language as long as its not too extreme is fine.
