Many thanks to everyone who responded to my request for recommendations for an
unabridged dictionary suitable for high school; the responses follow. I appreciate
everyone who took the time to e-mail.
Thank you all so much for all I've learned from LM_NET!
Responses:
* "For our upper and honor classes we like the Oxford English Dictionary - all 20
volumes. :) "
* "Do you think it will actually be used?
There are many dictionaries available online--for free."
* "We have Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, 2nd ed., c.2001, about
2200 pages.
Very popular with students because it includes literary expressions in its
definitions. "Draw" has 71 (yes, 71) sub-definitions, ending with "luck of the
draw." Their English class vocab usually has terms like "Pyrrhic victory" which we
find in this volume.
I have it on a big clear acrylic stand from Demco so that it's always open to
something interesting."
* (One additional recommendation of the Oxford English Dictionary that I seem to
have lost track of - sorry.)
Thanks again,
