I am posting this list that I sent to Cheryl on best books for the college bound.
In her original post, she asked for books published in the last couple of years,
and although I included a few that were older, I concentrated mainly on recent
publications. I am certain that she must not have received my reply, and I believe
the list will be of interest to the rest of the members. There are a few that I
still have to read, ones my son, who is a freshman in college, recommended (The
Brief History of the Dead and World War Z). I hope this list will be interesting to
others, too.

Cheryl,
OK, I have come up with a list of books, but I've included some that I know are
older than a couple of years. I just couldn't resist adding some older titles, and
I even stopped myself from adding more. The list is not in any order of importance
or preference.
1. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen (Fiction)
2. The Lost: A Search for Six of Six Million by Danile Mendelsohn (Non fiction)
3. At Canaan's Edge: America in the King Years, 1965-68 by Taylor Branch -- Also
included should be the first two books of this three-book biography of King,
Parting of the Waters and Pillar of Fire (Non fiction)
4. The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation by Sid Jacobson (Non fiction)
5. World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks (Fiction)
6. The Brief History of the Dead by Kevin Brockmeier (Fiction)
7. How Soccer Explains the World by Franklin Foer (Non fiction)
8. Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang (Non fiction)
9. The Good German by Joseph Karon (Fiction)
10. The Last Town on Earth: A Novel by Thomas Mullen (Fiction)
11. Ordinary Heroes by Scott Turow (Fiction)
12. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (Fiction -- I'm sure you have this one
already, but it's at the top of my list for anyone to read.)
13. Dooms Day Book by Connie Willis (Fiction)
14. Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi (Non fiction)
15. The Plot Against America by Philip Roth (Fiction)
16. My Jim by Nancy Rawles (Fiction)
17. The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri (Fiction)
18. Interpreter of Maladies: Stories by Jhumpa Lahiri
19. I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak (Fiction)
20. Next by Michael Crichton (Fiction)
21. The Aeneid by Virgil (2006 edition of translation by Robert Fagles)
22. Blog! How the Newest Media Revolution is Changing Politics, Business and
Culture by David Kline and Dan Burstein (Non fiction)
23. The Highest Tide by Jim Lynch (Fiction)
24. The Girls by Lori Lansens (Fiction)
25. The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards (Fiction)
26. The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar (Fiction)
27. The Bookseller of Kabul by Asne Seierstad (Non fiction)
I'm stopping now, but I know I will have missed something. Forgive the older
entries, please.

I am updating my Best Books for the College Bound and am looking for titles that
have been published in the last couple of years that you believe should be put
on a list. Thank you for any help.
