I, too, have a "crisis" walkie-talkie - which I can use in emergencies and be in
the loop as I am on the Crisis team.
I also do not leave the building during fire drills but keep all students in
wheelchairs or crutches - who happen to be on the second floor.
It is also used if a student is experiencing a crisis and needs a counselor as I
have had courses in Death and Dying, Crisis counseling, etc.
It does give you a feeling of power, I agree. Right now we are having a white-out -
our first snow of the winter. Do I dare declare a crisis and close the school? Lots
of power for a librarian!!!

Subject: Re: [LM_NET] A new experience!!!!!!!!!!
I had a similar experience this year....when after 23 years of experience,
the library was given a walkie-talkie to contact security, maintenance,
etc., regarding issues relating to emergencies, drills (like fires,
tornados, etc.) or to have immediate contact with those individuals who are
usually NEVER at a desk when you call by phone.
During a fire drill, I remember to pick up the walkie-talkie to take with me
while moving the students outside. Once there, I counted the
students...then...a surge of 1970's overcame me...a cross between a "really
bad CHiPS" episode and "CB-radio-itis" ....for whatever reason, ...the
power,... the voice....it sounded like I was in control of a police "convoy"
and "breaker, breaker"...we are all accounted for in the library! Do you
copy? :)
