When I earned my MLS at FSU in 1990, the students all had to pass
"competencies" that showed we were able to a variety of media. We had
to be able to splice 16mm film and repair it, we had to be able to run
projectors and we even had to make a movie using - for example - Gumby
and Pokey - putting them in various positions and editing it all into a
2 minute "movie". We had to make a video production movie using people
and edit that as well.

AND everyone had to pass a computer "competency". Back at that time,
computers did not have a hard drive and had to be booted up with a disk
and then all work was saved to a floppy.

This was also the same time that the first library cataloging program
came out, Librarians Helper or Librarians Friend. It would print all of
the catalog card for you. You put in the basic cataloging info and your
tractor feed card catalog stock and away it would go. We all thought it
was fantastic since we didn't have to type them all by hand. I still
have my copy that I bought. I ran across it not too long ago:)

Subject: Re: GEN: first computer

Fun trip down memory lane for some, maybe. In my case, my first computer
was a product only an engineer could love. An IBM AT, with black and
white screen, and it spoke DOS.
2 thoughts that didn't occur to me until years (and Apple computers)
later:
1. why was there an atmosphere of " I'm not very good at this - I need
to try harder/be smarter"?
2. What was going on at ALA, that in those early years, the
dissemination of information by computer means was seen to be somehow so
different from printed methods, that it was OK to let MIS grads be seen
as experts, not MLS grads. What a very different view of librarians (and
their salaries) the world would have now, if action had been taken early
on by ALA and the graduate schools of Library Science.
Do you think I'm too critical? Do you think I don't really understand
the role of ALA in promoting/supporting our profession?
I'm open to other interpretations....
