[LM_NET] HIT: Cat In The Hat Turns 50

Thanks to all who shared their great ideas for celebrating the Cat In The 
Hat's 50th birthday this March.  As promised, here are the responses I got.  
This group is the best!

We are having a read-a-thon that day to raise money for a local children's 
hospital and starting our Everybody Reads program that day by handing out a 
copy of Things Not Seen to every student. I think we'll probably also have 
birthday cake at lunch.

We do a big Seuss Week for the week in March Dr. Seuss' birthday falls. I 
have had guest readers come in before...though that took so much time and 
planning on top of what we do that I only did it a couple of times. We have 
a local grocery store make about 3 large sheet cakes with HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. 
SEUSS on them and serve everyone in the school a slice.
Other events we have that week include...Hat Day, Who Hair Day, Silly Socks 
Day, Door Decorating contest among the teachers, Seuss readings and guessing 
contests over the intercom, etc.
I also order Seuss-related pencils, hats, and other items and sell in a 
"Seuss Store" for the weeks before the event and during that week. I make a 
pretty good amount of money just from doing this.
I put up one of those canopy frames you can get in the summer on one side of 
the library and drape a multicolored parachute over it. 2nd & 3rd graders 
get a couple of Seuss passes per class and teachers can send two students at 
a time to read under the Seuss Tent. I have an assortment of plush 
Seuss-story characters under the tent as well that they can read with.
We do other things, but can't think of them right now! Ha... I think I will 
do a bulletin board the month before Dr. Seuss' birthday and have a 
silouette or drawing of the Cat in the Hat hidden behind a big circular pice 
of paper and something like..."Guess Who Turns 50 this year?" Maybe even get 
students and staff to bring in pictures of their cats to put on the board 
too.

Some of the teachers in the lower grades have their students make hats. Most 
of them let their classes go to suessville.com and play the games. I usually 
put together book baskets to send around to each grade. This year I'm toying 
with the idea of challenging the upper grades to write their own Cat in the 
Hat spoof. I'll certainly be interested in seeing your HIT.

We've ordered C-i-t-Hat bookmarks and a plush toy. Already have the C "READ" 
poster and Dr. Seuss stickers. We have a teacher who will dress the part and 
show up in the library.
