[LM_NET] ELEM: shelf markers?

This will seem like a really strange question, but how exactly do children 
use shelf markers? I have tried to have students return books not checked 
out to a shelving cart, but am tired of finding books stuck randomly on the 
shelves. Thanks in advance.
