[LM_NET] OT: Target: "Sage on the Stage"

Hi, folks.  
Does anybody know where the phrase "sage on the stage" (meaning a
teacher who just lectures) and the companion phrase "guide on the side"
(meaning a teacher who guides students) come from?  I often see them in
professional development literature, always in quotes, but I haven't
found a source.
