My daughter, who teaches at an elementary school in Key West, called this morning
and I am green with envy. Judy Blume visited their school today through the
coordinated efforts of the library media specialist there (of course). Some
wonderful news my daughter gave me is that Judy is working on a new Pain and the
Great One book. She shared some of it with the teachers and students. The students
were very excited. Authors do such an important service when they visit schools and
share their craft and imagination with students. My daugher especially enjoyed The
Pain and the Great One when she was young, relating to it because of her little
brother. I have long been a Judy Blume fan, not only for her writing, but also for
her stand and efforts concering book censorship (her anti-censorship stand). If you
haven't read Places I Never Meant to Be compiled by Judy Blume, then you owe it to
yourself to do so. In it she has collected original short stories for the book by
twelve dif!
ferent young adult authors and an added short discussion on censorhip by each
author, their thoughts and personal experience with censorship. Authors include
David Klass, Norma Klein, Julius Lester, Chris Lynch, Harry Mazer, Norma Fox Mazer,
Walter Dean Myers, Katherine Paterson, Susan Beth Pfeffer, Rachel Vail, Jacqueline
Woodson, and Paul Zindel. Sorry, I meant to just mention the new book Judy Blume is
working on, but I can't seem to mention this celebrated author without giving her
credit for her work in anti-censorship.
