Happy Friday all,
I received some interesting titles from our wonderful group. If I
neglected to thank you with a reply, I am sorry. Thanks to all who took
the time to respond.
Our 5th grades have: Bridge to Teribithia (but with the movie coming
out, it might not be a good novel fit now); Hatchet; Roll of Thunder,
Hear My Cry and The Cay. That's all I can remember for now.
Good Luck
The Cay
The Gate of No Return or In Search of Barnsfoggon--both of the Axle
Galench series by Rooster Morris. Each classroom set comes with a
comprehensive curriculum and audio book on CD read word for word by the
author. Both teachers and librarians are bragging on ease of use and
how much the kids are enjoying them.
Some title we have used with out fifth graders include: From the
Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, The Whipping Boy, Out of
the Dust, Number the Stars, Chasing Redbird, Bridge to Terabithia, and
Esperanza Rising. They are all very different, at various reading
levels, varied genres, etc. Hope this helps.
How about Frindle by Clements?
Try: Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn
Time for Andrew by Mary Downing Hahn
The Face on the Milk Carton by Carolyn Cooney
I thought these when I was in the classroom and my students loved them,
especially the first two.
Frindle (3)
The Giver by Lois Lowry
My class loves The City of Ember.
Good morning:
Our 5th graders love:
Kenneth Oppel Books--Silverwing, Airborn, etc.
Bud, not Buddy--Christopher Paul Curtis
Journey to the River Sea--Eva Ibbotson
Roman Mysteries--Caroline Lawrence
How about something fun such as the Hank the Cowdog series. This
series
kept my then 5th grade son reading.
I suggest The Wright 3 by Blue Balliett. Also Chasing Vermeer. They
are both fun msyetries that boys and girls both love.
Running out of Time Margaret Peterson Haddix
My class loved Pictures of Hollis Woods and also
Hatchet is great.
Our 5th Grade is reading and enjoying some of Elvira Woodruff's novels.
Orphan of Ellis Island is real popular as is Letters to Levi. Both are
historical fiction although Orphan of Ellis Island mixes in a little
fantasy
to get there!
Freak The Mighty & Max The Mighty
Roll of Thunder
Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen is a favorite of our teachers.
Our 5th graders also study some of the Dear America titles ( as they
fit into the social studies curriculum) , as well as My Side of the
Mountain, Pinballs, Mixed up Files of Mrs Basil E frankweiler, and some
others that I can't think of right now.
Esperanza Rising and Becoming Naomi Leon, both by Pam Munoz Ryan. Both
are amazing :)
One book that I would recommend the teachers looking at is Landry News
by Andrew
Clements. The teachers can focus on the Constitution, especially the
1st
Ammendment. It was on the Texas Bluebonnet List (one of our state
award books)
a few years ago.
Our fifth grade classes read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred
Taylor.
Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen is a favorite of our teachers.
