Below are details about a workshop in New York City that will introduce you to the
Japanese form of puppetry known as Bunraku.
Please note: I don't work for this organization and I will not receive any benefit
by mentioning it to you.
The Japanese Society is located near the United Nations Building. The workshops
are incredibly reasonable (price), and much worth your time and energy. You will
spend the first part of the day learning about the art form and after lunch (that
is provided) you will actually observe a performance.
If you are interested in Japanese culture or wish to learn the language, this
organization has so much more to offer. See their website.
There is another Society in San Antonio and I suspect there are in many cities
throughout the country.

according to the following schedule: 10am-12:30pm Introduction to ningyo joruri
for educators by Professor J. Martin Holman, Japanese Studies Program, University
of Missouri. LUNCH 2-4pm Observation of a family program on ningyo joruri,
including a performance. Martin Holman’s bio is listed below. For more

Victoria Moller Bio for J. Martin Holman J. Martin Holman lived for nearly ten
years in Japan, where he taught Japanese literature at Wakayama University and
served as resident director of the Japan Center for Michigan Universities in the
city of Hikone in Shiga Prefecture and the Associated Kyoto Program Center (AKP) at
Doshisha University in Kyoto. He has also led study programs for American college
and university students in Japan, in which the participants study Japanese
language, culture, and theater, with a particular emphasis on the traditional
puppet theater. My activities also include directing and performing in the
traditional Japanese puppet theater. I was the first non-Japanese to train and
perform as a puppeteer in the traditional puppet theater in Japan, and I now direct
the Bunraku Bay Puppet Troupe, which consists largely of alumni of my programs in
Japan. Bunraku Bay has performed traditional Japanese puppetry at venues across the
United States and Japan, including the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and
the Iida Puppetry Festival in Nagano. Victoria Moller Education Associate Japan
