Maybe a Road Show is in order here. I have done this a few times in elementary.
Gather up books and current class records in paper form and take your cart to the
room. Do some bang-up book talking and sell those books. You could handle check
out to kids in paper form there and process when you get to a computer.
It's direct, quick and shows off your skills. It also gets you into contact with
students.
Truth is teachers won't value you and the program until you show them the value
you can add. I work hard every day to promote me and my program. I continue to
experience success, but I know if I get laryngitis and quite talking they will
forget all about my wonderful self!! Sad, but true, so I'm always selling the
library!!!

Ok, I have about had it with quite a few of our English teachers. They use their
classroom library to the exclusion of "my" library. Yes, they have quite a few
books that have been gotten from their tiny little budget, Scholastic points and
garage sales.
At a budget meeting yesterday, one of the worst offenders (head of the English
department-ARGH!) who hasn't brought her class to check out books NOT ONCE since I
have been there, was complaining about the dwindling English budget. I suggested
that perhaps they not use their money to buy books, and use the library instead.
She attacked me! Her classroom library is necessary because her kids read a lot,
and need to exchange books all the time. She doesn't have time to stop class to
come to the library every week. And, the best part- RESEARCH says classroom
libraries help kids learn to read.
I have a little research myself, but thought I would also ask you folks how you
handle book checkout in your buildings, as well as forward on to me any research
you have come across regarding this issue.
In middle school (we are grades 7/8) am I supposed to just GIVE UP? How can I help
this teacher to see the light?
She, and other like-minded thinkers, are putting my job in danger by not utilizing
the library AND definitely not providing kids with the best exposure to reading
materials.
HELP, LM_Netters!
