The movie is
Ghost and the darkness with Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer.
The book was "The Man-Eaters of Tsavo", by Colonel J.H. Patterson.
Now I can sleep tonight.

Ghost in the darkness is the movie, the book may have a different title
and may be a short story (a long one).
It is rated R and has Michael Douglas.
The book is excellent, the movie is graphic. I screamed at one point in
the movie, it was so unexpected. Definitely too much for elem and
middle and we don't show r raters in our high school.
