I'd appreciate opinions on this required reading list for 6th through 8th graders
in a middle school
gifted program. Students are required to choose one of the following titles. I
would like to visit with
the teacher about expanding the available choices for these intelligent, but quite
young, students.
I'd appreciate feedback on individual titles or the list as a whole. Thanks--

STRONG AT THE BROKEN PLACES by Max Cleland
I HEARD THE OWL CALL MY NAME by Margaret Craven
ICE CASTLES by Leonore Fleischer
THE MIRACLE WORKER by William Gibson
I NEVER PROMISED YOU A ROSE GARDEN by Joanne Greenberg
ORDINARY PEOPLE by Judith Guest
DEATH BE NOT PROUD by John Gunther
SUSAN'S STORY by Susan Hampshire
THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA by Ernest Hemingway
ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF IVAN DENISOVICH by Alexander Solzhenitsyn
CANNERY ROW by John Steinbeck
THE PEARL by John Steinbeck
ON GOLDEN POND by Ernest Thompson
THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN by E.G. Valens
THE BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS REY by Thornton Wilder

I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into
the other room and read a book.
