I recently ordered 140 dictionaries from World Almanac. I asked them to send about
7-8 out on preview. Their newest dictionary entitled "Webster's New Explorer
Dictionary" for grades 7 and up is what I ordered. It is hard cover; the pages are
similar to paper in a paperback book. The book is lightweight but seems very
durable. With 30 or more copies, the cost was only $8.78 each! See it for
yourself in their catalog on page 50. Our state now has students know word origins
and it also has those as well. I am very pleased with this dictionary. Since I
coordinate pictures for our school, we did a casual picture day last spring in
which I split the profits with the dept which brought the students down in their
classes for the picture taking session. Language Arts dept. jumped at the chance
and we both (library and Language arts) both earned about $1300.00 each - this is
how the dictionaries were paid for by their dept.

  Dear wise ones,
A classroom teacher recently asked if the library could purchase a set of
dictionaries for her classroom. I do not know what other librarians have done in
this situation, but it seems to me that the library should not really be
responsible for purchasing a set of dictionaries for one particular teacher to keep
in their room indefinitely. We still do not even know if we will receive any funds
yet this year. Regardless, I am searching for a good source of low-cost, decent
quality hardcover dictionaries for grades 3-5 and 6-8, I think these are usually
termed "elementary" and "intermediate" dictionaries, respectively. Please let me
know if you have found a good supplier. I will be doing my own research as well,
but if anyone else has recently purchased sets, that may help speed up my search.
Once I find a good source, I think I will approach PTO with the idea of purchasing
classroom sets of dictionaries for each teacher in these grade levels (using
PTO $ of course), citing teacher requests and desire to increase use of these
resources by students. I will post a hit if there is enough interest. Thanks in
advance.
