Thanks for all the responses. I did find a lot on the archives search for
kindergarten and first grade!
My original post:
Any start of the year lesson ideas for a newbie in a K-1 library? I would
appreciate any ideas.
Amy,
I like to start with "I took my frog to the Library" by Eric Kimmel. It's a
good book to use to talk about library behavior.

I like to start with Mother Goose rhymes because their brevity gives me lots
of flexibility. I have an apron from Childcraft with pockets of colorful
pre-printed cards of the rhymes. I choose children who are "following
instructions" to come up and pick my pocket, and we say the rhyme, talk
about the pictures, the words, etc. I got the apron on sale, but it would
be pretty easy to replicate the activity with your own custom made laminated
cards. For first graders I do the same except I throw in riddles about the
rhymes.

Hi--Please post a HIT, I just applied for K-2... this is very timely, as
long as I get the interview!
Thanks,
Kim
Amy,
Please share the ideas you get by either posting a hit or emailing them to
me directly.
Thank You,

Something I do for either orientation or as a beginning of the year
activity-I fill a back pack with all the items kids bring to school and at
the bottom of the bag I put an old book that was crammed in the bag.
Item by item I take the items out of the bag. When I get to the book, the
kids all gasp because it is ruined and wrinkled. Then we talk about the
correct way to handle books and we read a story about being back at school.
Generally a 30 minute lesson. Works great for older grades as well.

Hi Amy,
Here are some ideas for the first two class periods I use with kindergarten
although it's certainly appropriate for first grade.
For the first class I focus on an introduction to the library.
We discuss" Why do you think there are libraries? How can you find a book
you want?
I read: Kimmel, Eric, I Took My Frog to the Library and Sierra, Judy, Wild
About Books
The next time we meet we discuss how to care for books:
Today we will talk about how to care for books.
What are books made of?
Why do we have to take care of library books?
Who do all these books belong to?
Read The Shelf Elf by Jackie Hopkins.
(SHOW DIFFERENT TYPES OF DAMAGED BOOKS)
Make up rules for taking care of books: (should include)
Have clean hands
Don't write on or mark books.
Turn pages from top or bottom corner.
Keep books clean and dry.
Carry books in backpack or plastic bag.
Keep books in a special place at home.
Return books so others can read them.
We have to treat books as gently as babies.
(SHOW BOOK BABY - A photo of a baby's head peeking out of the top of a
large-size picture book wrapped in a blanket.)
Do we leave babies on floor for someone to step on?
Balance them our heads?
Let pets step on them or nibble them?
Color on them?
Handle them roughly like shove them into a backpack?
Cut them? Handle them while we're eating?
Touch them with dirty hands?
YOU CAN BE A SHELF ELF TOO AND TAKE CARE OF LIBRARY BOOKS.
Decorate shelf elf hat with markers. (Paper elf hat)
Fit on each child's head - tape headband to size.
Hope this helps.
