Thanks so much for all of you who shared what you knew about the NYC
public library lions.
I did write to the library itself from it's webpage and got the
following response along with some other websites for folks to look
at. Seeing the "other" choices, I have to say that I agree that the
lions were a good choice. (Beaver Lovers do not sent hate mail!)

We have not found any specific references in our library history
material about why lions were chosen. Sources mention preferences of
the public and other officials to elks and beavers.
