Hi Folks in LM-NET land
For the record, these books are also a hit at HS level, particularly with my
fantasy lovers. I think they "get" the humor on a little different level. Rick
Riordan was in Seattle for a book signing and it was jam packed. One of my former
TA's (who'd had a really tough week) was unable to attend so I got Rick to sign a
book for him. Now this is a 17 year old boy who looks like the character Ares in
the the first book - complete with spiked dog collar. When I handed Tim the book I
thought he'd either cry or hug me. It was great! This kid was personally
responsible for getting about 30 kids to read Lightning Theif just this year so it
was a fitting gift.

Subject: Re: [LM_NET] Another Great Serie
I just had to chime in on the discussion of the Percy Jackson and the
Olympians series. My 4th and 5th grade students simply adored the book
and couldn't wait for the sequels. I read the book as a lunch time book
club and you'd have been amazed at how well these students can sit at rapt
attention even during lunch. Many students couldn't stand to wait a week
in between sessions, so read it on their own and then still attended to
re-hear the rest of the story. We were all amazed when this book did not
win the Bluebonnet Award.
Rick Riordan was doing a book signing at TLA this year and the line was
huge. I got my advanced reader copy of book 3 signed for my top 4th grade
reader of the year to be given away at our reading awards party (after I'd
read it myself, of course). I think I made that 4th grade boy's year and
definitely impressed his mother. I'm not sure how I'll top that this next
year. ;-)
The other fantasy series that has captured my students is The Underland
Chronicles. The first book, Gregor the Overlander, was a Bluebonnet
nominee from the previous year and the series is now up through book 5.
I always have a huge waiting list for these series and most impressively,
it's those "reluctant" male readers.
