There have only been a few responses and they are similar. I have posted the
responses below, thank you to everyone who emailed me.
The consensus seems to be using an external HD is the one solution to being able
to back up your files, have them readily at hand, and carry them from place to
place. Most everyone commented on the problems of duplication. Apparently,
digital data is a difficult to keep as regular old paperwork. Does anyone still
use File 13?

I have also started using flash drives to store all of my files,
photos, etc. Even back up the collection/inventory on a flash drive these
days.
my IT guy recommended the SanDisc and now i have 3 of them (each 2 G)
Duplication is a problem, but i designated each flash drive for a
different function (personal, school, photos) and then have tried to be
disciplined about updating the files when modifications are made. This
forced me to weed through a lot of my electronic files - i was surprised
how much i was able to purge.

I've had the same problems, Lisa. I've seen portable USB hard drives in the
advertisements lately. They hold 60 Gigabytes, some of the spendier ones probabaly
hold even more. I don't know anyone who uses one, but they might be worth looking
in to. Good luck!

I use files for each subject I teach in the library... and then inside I divide
those folders by grade level.
I was so frustrated when I created something at home and then needed it at school
and vice-versa that I ended up buying a USB portable hard-drive. I now backup my
home and school computers on the portable hard-drive and take it back and forth
with me each day.

I have also struggled with this issue and lately have been using my gmail
account and Google docs and spreadsheets so that I can access my files from
anywhere. With gmail, you get 1 gig of storage space so I e-mail myself lesson
plans and then label them lessons-then topic. If you would like a gmail account, I
can send you an invitation (this used to be the only way to obtain one although it
may have changed now). I believe you have to have a gmail account to use their
docs and spreadsheets service, but both of these work very much like Microsoft's
version only the docs are stored on the web so you can access them from anywhere
and you can also choose to share a doc with someone to "collaborate" on a document.
Recently, I saw a write up on about.com about free storage sites on the web
(http://websearch.about.com/od/web20/a/online-storage.htm ). I haven't yet tried
any of these services but this could also help.
