Author: Ann L. Dreyer-
After Elaine
Gina’s life has changed forever when her troubled sister, Elaine is
killed in a car accident. Could someone as angry as Elaine ever care about
anyone?? Gina wonders. In a series of Flashbacks, Gina paints a picture of her
deeply unhappy teenage sister and the failed attempts of the family to reach
Elaine. As communication between grieving family members breaks down, Gina finds
herself following in her sister’s footsteps until tensions at school escalate and
finally erupt in an explosive scene that takes everyone by surprise. In the end
Gina learns that Elaine’s mistakes don’t have to be hers, too. And she realizes
that letting go of Elaine maybe the hardest thing she’s ever had to do.
Whether navigating their way through junior high or struggling with
the loss of a loved one, students will find hope in this sensitive yet honest
portrayal of a family coping with loss.
“We discussed artifacts the next day. Mr. Pope asked us to name some
examples. “If you dug up Gina’s sister, you’d find a beer bottle with her.” Tracy
said. “That would be an artifact.” She turned and smirked at me. My lungs slammed
shut. The room was absolutely still.”
