Earlier this summer, someone asked about how to implement a healthy
exercise and diet program for teachers...and I won't go into my
soapbox rant about how recess, exercise, and physical education has
been slowly eliminated from elementary, middle, and high school
programs...but if you can use this as a model of how we have slowly
become an "Obese Nation," please feel free to share!
**************
Fit Nation: the Obesity Fight - CNN
http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/fit.nation/obesity.map/
Another stunning example of the power of visualization to illuminate raw
data - in this case, the spread of obesity in America over the past 20
years.
***************
This could also be an interesting project for high school students to
examine and evalute as they research the reasons why some states have
more obese individuals than others ---one of those "ban the bird unit"
projects!
Rather than a simple "cut and paste the facts" assignment, pose the
questions to investigate: What factors are most likely involved in
creating a "nation of obese" individuals and why? --- city vs.urban
areas, individuals' access to exercise facilities (parks, gyms),
transportation issues to and from work, food choices available,
cultural influences, income, climate, elimination of exercise
programs/ physical education in schools, etc.? What factors could
impact a change in a state's level of "obsesity" ---- if your state is
an "obese state", what changes can be implemented to correct the
problem (have students create a list of possible solutions and then
move forward to implement some of their ideas at the local and / or
state levels).
Just brainstorming with myself (it's tricky...sort of like a puppy
chasing its tail...but always fun!) *grin*
Have fun!
